Oil paint on board
This is the third painting in the set, and my favourite. Bushido is a popular Japanese concept most everyone knows about. Like the Chivalrous knight and the Superhero, the Samurai are governed by a set of ideals and codes that are very much larger-than-life. They are black and white in a gray world, to where one code can contradict another on occasion. It is another beautiful romanticized idea that so many have reached for. The figure resembles a samurai, but is nonspecific of an particular individual. The background is of cherry blossom trees, a setting device often related to samurai. Like I said, this is my favourite of the set. I based the background on a real photo, and intended it to be done as realistically as possible, but it turned into an impressionist style. (or expressionist? I always get those two mixed up) Regardless, I like it much better than the intended realist background. The figure is based off an old traditional samurai painting, but I turned it into a Cubist abstraction. The light reflecting off the painting seemed to mess up the whiter areas in the photo a little bit, you can only notice if you look closely but I thought that would be important to note.
